CAN cards now have new technology:

  • Your new CAN card is now safer because it comes with EMV Chip (Chip and PIN) technology, the new European standard to guarantee authenticity.
  • The PIN number has to be entered each time the card is used, meaning that only you can use it.
  • Although it is new, you can still use it as until now at any cashpoint machine or shop in the world.
  • Shops are changing their old terminals for terminals adapted to EMV technology.
  • In shops which have already made the change, transactions are performed by reading the chip on the card to check that it is authentic, and then, instead of signing, all you have to do is enter your PIN number.
  • At other shops, transactions are performed as before, reading the magnetic strip on the card and signing the receipt.
  • The PIN you need in order to pay is the same as the one you use for cashpoint machines.
  • Remember that you can change your PIN at our cashpoint machines whenever you like and that you must commit it to memory; do not write it down anywhere and do not let anyone know what it is. If you do not remember your PIN, visit your usual branch office.
